The book examines the top group of the nobility of the county of Körös (Križevci in modern Croatia), one of the greatest counties in the medieval Hungarian Kingdom, from the aspect of social history in the period between 1400 and 1526. After a brief historiographical survey, and a detailed methodological introduction, it presents the histories of the noble families chosen as the target of analysis, with a special emphasis on political activities, landholding, office-holding and marriage policies. The second part of the book is a multi-faceted analysis of the information contained in the previous section. Separate chapters deal with the origins of the various families, with the circulation of landed wealth and social mobility, while others address the problems of noble service, office-holding, marriage strategies, as well as the relationship between the nobility and the royal court and the church. Based on the results achieved in the preceding chapters, the last chapter tries to answer the question of whether it is possible to speak about an elite group within the late medieval county nobility, and if yes, in what sense and from what time on. The book presents the genealogical trees of all the families whose history is dealt with, and also the archontology of the bans of Slavonia and their deputies in the period examined.
