The Driving Forces of the Hungarian Economy in the Centuries of the Middle Ages („Lendület” Medieval Hungarian Economic History Research Group)

The „Lendület” Medieval Hungarian Economic History Research Group conducts an interdisciplinary research of the factors that influence the way the economy of Hungary operates and changes throughout and beyond the Middle Ages, as from an economic historian’s point of view, 1526 cannot be considered an end of an era and a beginning of a new one.  The research group will investigate the Hungarian Kingdom’s role in the economy; the institutions in charge of running the finances; the review of the decrees made by the rulers that are relevant to the economy; the role of towns in the economy, and the economic activities of the towns (the administrative, infrastructural and entrepreneurial levels).

Exploiting Economic Resources: Roads and Nodal Points in the History of the Medieval Hungarian Kingdom (2020–2024)

During the project, the research group will examine and analyse the evolution of the Kingdom’s revenues (direct and extraordinary taxes, monopoly of precious ores, salt and coinage, tolls, thirtieth, other revenues: pledges and loans), the coinage as the basic instrument of the economy, domestic and foreign trade, the crafts, the road network and the institutions connected to trade, the economic policies of the towns; we create the archontology of tavernicalis towns and online map (viamercatoria.abtk.hu; the long-term objective of the programme is to present the venues of trading, the roads used by merchants, as well as the points of toll collection along the roads and river crossing places in the medieval Kingdom of Hungary).
