Zoltán Korpás’s Warfare at the Limits of Empire – Charles V, the Mediterranean and the Defence of Hungary has been published in the Mohács 1526–2026: Reconstruction and Remembrance series.
This book offers a fresh perspective on the relationship between the Kingdom of Hungary and the empire of Charles V, exploring their political, military, and diplomatic cooperation in the struggle against the Ottomans between 1526 and 1556. At the crossroads of Central European and Mediterranean history, it reveals how Habsburg policies shaped Hungary’s position during a critical period of Ottoman expansion against Europe. By tracing the interconnected histories of the Spanish, Italian, and Central European fronts, the study uncovers a wider, transregional conflict that bound together distant theatres of war into a single strategic landscape.

Zoltán Korpás, PhD is a Hungarian historian and Hispanist focusing on the sixteenth-century Habsburg Monarchy and the Kingdom of Hungary, with particular emphasis on their connections to the Mediterranean world and the presence of Spanish tercios in Hungary – subjects he has explored in numerous studies.
The 572-page English-language hardcover volume was published by the Institute of History, ELTE Research Centre for the Humanities.
