The richly illustrated new volume of József Szentpéteri's book, The Tépe Treasure presents the story of an exciting investigation in both English and Hungarian. Exactly 110 years have passed since the discovery of a fabulous treasure on the outskirts of a remote village in County Bihar, in an area known as Görbekert, which in the finders’ family lore was preserved as the “golden mound”.

Our research on the 19th century focuses on the publication of the correspondence of one of the most significant Hungarian personalities of the period, Count István Széchenyi, as well as the letters and other personal documents of the scholarly bishop, Arnold Ipolyi. The proceedings of the Common Ministerial Councils of the Austro–Hungarian Monarchy are also being published (in a joint project with Austrian historians), along with the exploration of bankruptcy trials under the Monarchy. We also are planning a multidisciplinary analysis of the evolution of Hungarian nationalism, as seen through the sciences and creative arts, involving almost all the institutes of the HAS RCH. In addition to these activities, members of the team are also pursuing research on the history of the Balkans in the 19-20th centuries, Hungarian right-wing extremism, the history of everyday life during the period of the Monarchy, and rural urbanization in the 19–20th centuries.

Members of the Contemporary History Research Team are involved primarily in the history of Hungary after World War II. Their research focuses in particular on two significant topics: the history of international relations and the social history of the era after 1945, especially the so-called “Kádár” period (1956–1989). Members of the team participate in several international comparative projects. The research team considers it of crucial importance to establish a forum for scholars of Hungarian and Central East European contemporary history by organizing domestic and international scientific conferences. The research team launched a series of conferences in 2012 to discuss important issues of Hungarian and international contemporary history and to designate new directions of research.

The research team is charged with the task of creating a current historical bibliography. Between 1956 and 1984 current historical bibliographies were published in Századok (Centuries), the professional journal of the Hungarian Historical Society, founded in 1867 (the year in which the periodical was launched). These bibliographies contained information regarding the works of secondary historical literature that had been published in the previous year or half-year, organized thematically and chronologically. Between 1985 and 1993 the bibliography was published in separate volumes, but after 1993 the collection and publication was discontinued. The research team consists of only a few members who are preparing the historical bibliography of the period after 1994, which they intend to publish (organized by year) on the institute’s website.
